The Rig

'The Rig' is a 3D environment I created for my final major project for my last year at university. It is heavily inspired by The Chinese Room's 'Still Wakes the Deep' and is the first time I have created an environment of this scale. I took an interest in industrial settings early on in my degree, and I knew that I wanted to create something with the same themes for my final major project. 

The intention behind my project was to use the environment, lighting and weather conditions to portray the declining stages of a person's mental wellbeing and the consequences it may have on the human psyche. An offshore rig is often described as one of the loneliest and mentally demanding environments you can work in, so I thought it would be an effective setting for my project's intent. 

I created 2 versions of the rig - a daytime shot that is overcast but overall calm, representing what people see on a day-to-day basis when it comes to mental health, and a nighttime shot that includes more chaos and worsening conditions, representing the side of mental health that is often overlooked.

This project has taught me a lot about lighting, rendering and has helped me learn more about optimising my asset creation process, and I will continue to return to this project as my skills develop throughout the next stages of my career.
